COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
PART I: Intensive Courses Aug. 1-3
Tap with a Swing/Cornell:
Go back
to the real roots of tap, i.e. jazz music with an experienced
teachers, who will make you feel comfortable in class.
Improv & Music Structure/Cornell:
As an experienced improviser Ms. Cornell will give you uselful
improvisation exercizes without letting you standing still for a
long time waiting for your turn to tap. Live music provided by
Tomi Harrivaara (b.) and Tuomas Kauppi (piano).
Funky Grooves & Technique &
Rhythm Tap Technique/Hilberman:
Learn from a teacher that
will make you feel comfortable in class and who can tell you how
to do steps
Big Band Tap/Whitmore:
Relax and have fun with a patient teacher, who will make you
exceed your limits as a dancer. You will be tapping to tunes by
the 1930-40's. swing bands who also used to collaborate with tap
dancers.
Liquid Moves -- Solid Groove/Pollak: Mr Pollak, who is also a musician, will take you to the complex and exciting world of Afro-Cuban rhythms and movements with your tap shoes.
Body Percussion/Pollak:
Stamping,
your feet, slapping the body and singing in different rhythmic
patterns. Wear sneakers!
Gumboot Dancing/Iwahori:
A
high-energy class with its origins in dancing by South African
miners and sugar cane workers. Wear sneakers or gumboots!
PART I: Workshops Aug 4
National Anthems of Tap:
The Shim
Sham/Whitmore:
A four step routine created in 1927 by
Leonard Reed and Willie Bryant. This routine unites tap dancers
around the world. You can find several variations of it.
The Walk Around/Cornell:
The
routine was created by the legendary Honi Coles - therefore also
called the Coles Stroll - and used frequently by the Copacetics
dance group. With this dance the tap masters of the group
introduced themself on stage. A fun routine for all
levels.
The Trad. B.S. Chorus/Whitmore.
A
traditional four step routine used frequently during the
vaudeville era. It was often used to test the tap dancing skills
of dancers.
Tap Legend
Tribute to Jimmy Slyde/Pollak:
Learn
steps Mr Pollak learnt from the living legend Jimmy Slyde. -
famous for his smooth dancing and excellent phrasing.
PART II: Intensive Program in Karjaa
Tribute to Buster Brown: Max Pollak, who was a close friend of Buster Brown until his death, will teach you the great melodic tap dancing by the legendary master.
Tribute to Eddie Brown: Heather Cornell will teach you the rhythm tap version of the B.S. Chorus created by the legendary tap dancer Eddie Brown. This routine is completely different from the traditional B.S. Chorus and rhythmwise very challenging
